Mushroom Dispensary in Ottawa
As mushroom dispensary near me draws nearer, some people are turning to psilocybin, or magic mushrooms, as a natural alternative to prescription drugs. And while it’s illegal in Canada, a few shops are opening up across the city to sell the hallucinogen to a select clientele.
Jordan Armstrong has been running his Magic Mushroom Shop in downtown Ottawa since December 2021. He says that while some stores have been raided, his is not one of them. “The police have more significant fish to fry — it’s about the trafficking of illegal drugs that are killing people in our streets,” he says.
Bruce Kagan, who runs Shroomyz in Osborne Village, agrees that the police have other priorities. He says that in the four months his store has been open, he hasn’t seen a single police officer visit. That’s not because of a lack of concern for public safety, but rather a realization that the law doesn’t seem to be targeting mushroom stores as aggressively as it does cannabis ones.

But others say the police are cracking down, threatening to close their leases if they don’t stop selling psilocybin. That’s a problem for the owners, who argue that their stores are helping people with depression and anxiety. They also point to research showing that psilocybin can reduce the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, and help people overcome addictions to alcohol, tobacco or opioids. But Health Canada warns that consuming mushrooms can cause anxiety, nausea, muscle twitches, and heart palpitations.
