How to Buy a 5-Carat Diamond Ring

A stunning 5 Carat Diamond Ring is a true statement piece, bringing a sense of luxury and prestige to any look. However, like any large size diamond, a quality 5-carat stone can be quite pricey. In this article, we reveal the critical factors that go into determining the cost of an exceptional 5 carat diamond – and show you how to shop with confidence.

The Ultimate Guide to Buying a Stunning 5 Carat Diamond Ring

The first step in choosing a great 5 carat diamond is selecting a well cut shape. A round diamond with a Good or Excellent cut grade will sparkle and be very flattering on the finger. For fancy shapes like pear, marquise and emerald cuts, you need to ensure the stone is well proportioned (checking the millimeter dimensions of the diamond will tell you this). Emerald and pear shapes can be bottom-heavy, meaning that much of the weight is below the girdle which makes the diamond appear smaller than it is. In this case, you may need to go down a clarity grade to VS2 for the best value.

Once you’ve selected a shape and cut, focus on color and clarity. Because of their size, large diamonds reveal more color than their smaller counterparts. Therefore, a G or H near-colorless grade is ideal for a 5-carat diamond. In white gold or platinum settings, you can even drop down to K without seeing yellow tones in the diamond. However, in yellow gold and rose gold settings, we recommend staying closer to IF (flawless) or VS2 for the best value.
